Ormantaev Kamal Saruarovich, the founder of pediatric surgery in Kazakhstan, pediatrician, Doctor of medical Sciences, professor, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan and Vice-President of the Academy of Preventive Medicine of Kazakhstan, died at the age of 89. Laureate of the State Prize of the Republic of Kazakhstan (1999).

He was born in 1936 in the Kyzylorda region. In 1953 he entered the Alma Ata Medical Institute, and in 1968 he became the head of the Department of Pediatric Surgery. He was the director of the Scientific Center of Pediatrics and Children’s Surgery (1980-1993).

During his career, he performed about 20,000 operations, saving the lives of thousands of children, and trained more than 1,500 doctors who became leading specialists in Kazakhstan and beyond.
