The Department of Ophthalmology was established in August 2024 (by Order No. 124/1-zh/q dated August 29, 2024) as a result of the reorganization of the Department of Surgical Diseases at the KMU School of Public Health. The Head of the Department is Doctor of Medical Sciences Nailya Akhmetovna Aldasheva.
The Department of Ophthalmology of the KMU School of Public Health provides postgraduate training for ophthalmologists in the residency program in the specialty “Ophthalmology (Adult and Pediatric)”.
The teaching staff of the department includes one head of department, one professor, and two associate professors. In addition to the core faculty members, several highly qualified lecturers and practicing ophthalmologists with extensive professional experience and scientific achievements are also involved in the educational process.
Each member of the teaching staff is actively engaged not only in education but also in scientific research aimed at advancing medicine and improving surgical treatment methods. They also provide consulting, therapeutic, and surgical care for patients with various eye pathologies.
Residency training is conducted at the leading national ophthalmology center — the Kazakh Research Institute of Eye Diseases (KazNII GB). The Institute is the main specialized institution of the Republic of Kazakhstan that defines the strategic direction of ophthalmologic service development in the country. It has a long history, a strong scientific school, and a recognized reputation both nationally and internationally.
The Institute has a modern clinical base that includes outpatient and polyclinic departments, operating units, and departments of microsurgery, laser technologies, vitreoretinal and reconstructive surgery.
The research activities of the Institute are focused on the development and implementation of innovative diagnostic and treatment methods for eye diseases, including retinal pathologies, glaucoma, cataract, keratopathy, and other ophthalmologic conditions. This allows residents to manage patients with various ophthalmopathologies in accordance with the subjects of their clinical training.
The Institute actively cooperates with leading scientific centers in Kazakhstan and abroad, participates in international clinical studies, and implements joint projects in ophthalmologic science and education.
Experienced mentors from the department’s teaching staff and the Institute’s clinical units are involved in working with residents. All mentors hold the highest or first qualification category in ophthalmology.
Residents actively participate in conferences, seminars, symposia, trainings, and master classes. Each year, the International Conference of Young Ophthalmology Scientists is held at the Kazakh Research Institute of Eye Diseases.
The use of modern medical technologies fosters the development of residents’ cognitive competencies and professional thinking, while encouraging continuous professional growth and lifelong learning.
