Shymkent is actively progressing toward joining the European Healthy Cities Network of the World Health Organization (WHO).

During a series of meetings and working sessions with representatives of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan, WHO, and the city administration, the future prospects for Shymkent as part of the project were discussed. Joining the initiative will enable the city to implement best practices in healthcare, environmental protection, urban infrastructure, and social policy.

Akim of Shymkent Gabit Syzdykbekov, Deputy Akim Kuanysh Asylov, and Head of the Health Department Nurlybek Asylbekov met with Skender Syla, Head of the WHO Country Office in Kazakhstan.

The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation and expanding collaboration with international public health experts.

The “Healthy Cities” project aims to create a sustainable urban environment that promotes the health and well-being of the population. The initiative involves collaboration across multiple sectors — including health authorities, police, environmental and sanitary agencies, utility services, and others.

Among the key objectives are:

  • Ensuring safe living conditions
  • Providing equitable access to healthcare
  • Developing infrastructure for physical activity
  • Reducing environmental pollution

Currently, Shymkent is already implementing measures that align with the health development priorities promoted by the initiative.

During the most recent meeting between city officials and WHO representatives, plans were also discussed to host a thematic WHO forum in Shymkent with participation from several European countries. Additionally, there was discussion about organizing a marathon to promote mass sports and healthy lifestyles.
